Fast efficient service for medical certificates. I used the not fit to fly service and was provided with a certificate the next day, the price is very reasonable and enabled a flight credit refund with my airline. Would recommend and would use again if needed.

Katharine H. · 7 months ago

A fast and efficient service. It wasn't complicated and the Fit-to-fly note was accepted by the Airport without any further questions. Thank you.

Nicholas O. · 7 months ago

Excellent service. Easy to use and certificate issued in less than 24 hours. £39 as opposed to the £150 my GP charges. Highly recommended.

Joanna R. · 8 months ago

Quick and reasonably pain-free. Received their standard certificate as well as my requested bespoke certificate, by email, by 9am the following morning. Both completed properly, signed and stamped as required. More expensive than my GP, but infinitely quicker and easier.

Will R. · 7 months ago

One of the best experiences. It's easy to get a GP note.

Himanshu T. · 3 months ago

What Is a Fitness for Study Certificate?

A fitness for study certificate is a medical document from a GMC-registered doctor confirming that a student is medically fit to return to, or continue, their academic studies following a period of absence, interruption, or health-related concern. It is the student-facing equivalent of a fit to work certificate — but addressed to universities, colleges, and academic institutions rather than employers.

Universities use this document when a student has been away from studies for health reasons and the institution requires medical clearance before re-enrolment, or when a Fitness to Study process has been initiated and independent confirmation of readiness to engage with study is required.

Which certificate do you need?

Several MedicalCert documents are used in academic contexts — choosing the right one matters.

Fitness for Study Certificate (this page) Returning to study after interruption — confirms you are medically fit to re-engage with academic work and university life.
University Sick Note Documenting absence from classes, lectures, or exams due to illness — you are currently unwell.
Student Mitigation Letter Supporting a mitigating circumstances application for extensions, resits, or grade appeals — health affected performance at a specific time.
Mental Health Support Letter Documenting a mental health condition for ongoing accommodations, support planning, or disability services.

When Is a Fitness for Study Certificate Required?

🔄

Returning after an interruption of studies

If you took a leave of absence or formal interruption on health grounds, most universities require medical clearance confirming you are fit to re-enrol and engage with academic and social demands of university life before your return is approved.

📋

Fitness to Study process

Universities initiate a Fitness to Study procedure when a student’s health appears to be significantly affecting their academic progress, safety, or wellbeing. As part of this process, an independent medical assessment of fitness to continue or return is often required.

🏥

After prolonged illness or hospitalisation

Students who have been absent for an extended period due to serious illness, surgery, or mental health crisis may need to demonstrate medical clearance before their university confirms they may return to lectures, placements, or campus accommodation.

🎓

Professional or clinical programmes

Medicine, nursing, teaching, social work, and other programmes with fitness to practise requirements may require specific fitness documentation before students resume placements or clinical contact — check your programme’s specific requirements.

Conditions Commonly Supported

A fitness for study certificate can be issued following recovery from a wide range of conditions — physical and mental — where clinical evidence supports a return to academic study. Each case is assessed individually by our GMC-registered doctors.

Anxiety, depression, burnout
Post-viral recovery (including long COVID)
Eating disorders (in recovery)
Post-surgical recovery
Musculoskeletal injury
Chronic fatigue / ME
Acute mental health episode
Serious illness requiring treatment
A fitness for study certificate confirms readiness to return to study. It is not a substitute for the ongoing care and support your university’s wellbeing services, counselling team, or disability office can provide. We recommend engaging with those services as part of your return plan, not solely relying on medical documentation.

What the Certificate Contains

Your fitness for study certificate from MedicalCert is a signed PDF from a GMC-registered doctor, tailored to the academic context. It typically includes:

Confirmation of fitness to return to study
A clinical statement that you have been assessed and are considered fit to re-engage with academic study, where the evidence supports this.

Nature of the previous health concern
A clinically appropriate reference to the condition that led to your absence or interruption, supporting the university’s understanding of your situation.

Capacity to engage with study demands
Confirmation that you are fit to attend lectures, manage academic workload, and function as a member of the university community — the standard assessment universities request.

Recommendations for ongoing support (where appropriate)
Where clinically relevant, notes on support measures that may aid a sustainable return — such as phased re-engagement or disability service referral.

Issuing doctor’s details
Full name, GMC registration number, and signature confirming clinical legitimacy.

University-specific forms completed
If your university has provided a specific return-to-study form, upload it with your submission and our doctors will complete it where appropriate.

How to Get Your Fitness for Study Certificate

1

Complete the online questionnaire

Describe the health condition that led to your absence, how long you have been away from study, how your health has progressed, and your current status. Describe your university’s specific requirements — for example, whether they need confirmation of independent living capacity, ability to engage with academic workload, or readiness to attend placements.

2

Upload supporting evidence

Evidence of your health journey — prescription records, a previous GP or specialist letter, discharge notes, or a brief video describing your current health status. Upload your university’s return-to-study form if they have provided one.

3

GMC-registered doctor reviews and issues your certificate

One of our experienced GPs reviews your submission and — where the clinical evidence supports a return to study — issues your fitness certificate. The letter is tailored to the academic context and the specific requirements your university has communicated.

4

Submit to your university

Your signed PDF arrives in your inbox same day or by 9AM next morning. Forward it to your university’s student services, personal tutor, or the relevant committee managing your return. If the doctor cannot issue a certificate, you receive a full refund.

Fitness for Study Certificate FAQs

In most cases, yes. UK universities generally accept medical letters from GMC-registered GPs as evidence of fitness to return to study. Universities such as Imperial College London and others explicitly state that GP evidence is the standard for return-to-study clearance. Some universities specify that the GP letter should confirm the student can live independently and engage with academic demands — our certificate is structured to address these specific requirements. Check your university’s Fitness to Study or Return to Study policy for precise requirements.
Fitness for study relates to a student’s ability to engage with their academic programme — attend lectures, complete coursework, live and function within the university environment. Fitness to practise is a separate professional standard applied by regulatory bodies (such as the GMC for medical students) that relates to a student’s suitability to undertake clinical or professional placements and ultimately practise their profession. Some programmes require evidence of both. MedicalCert addresses fitness for general academic study — fitness to practise assessments are typically managed through your programme’s regulatory framework.
Yes, a medical letter supporting your fitness to engage with studies is commonly required as part of a university Fitness to Study process. However, Fitness to Study panels at universities typically also commission their own independent assessment — usually by a psychiatrist or occupational health practitioner. A MedicalCert GP letter can form part of your evidence submission and support your case, but is unlikely on its own to satisfy the formal requirements of a Fitness to Study panel. Engage with your university’s student support team for guidance on what specific evidence is required.
Yes, in many cases. If you have received appropriate support, your condition has stabilised, and you feel ready to re-engage with academic life, a fitness for study certificate can support your return application. The certificate will reflect your current clinical status as assessed through your consultation. We recommend also engaging with your university’s mental health and wellbeing services as part of your return plan — not as an alternative to the certificate, but in addition to it. See also our mental health support letter for ongoing accommodation documentation.
These serve opposite purposes. A university sick note confirms you are currently unwell and unable to attend studies. A fitness for study certificate confirms you are well enough to return. You would use a sick note during an absence and a fitness for study certificate when that absence is ending and you are ready to return. If you need to document both a past absence and current readiness to return, both documents can be requested — the sick note for the period of absence and the fitness certificate for the return.
Yes, in most cases. Upload your university’s return-to-study or re-enrolment health form with your evidence submission. Our doctors will complete it where the clinical information requested falls within the scope of a GP assessment and the evidence you have provided supports the completion. If your university’s form requires input from a specialist clinician (such as a psychiatrist or consultant), our GP letter can be provided as supporting evidence alongside that specialist input.
