Youth Camp and Trip Medical Certificate
A youth camp or trip medical certificate is a doctor-signed letter that sets out the health information a parent has declared for a child, and gives the doctor’s opinion, based on that information, about taking part in a camp, school trip or organised travel programme. Organisers use it alongside their own medical form and consent paperwork, not instead of it.
A MedicalCert youth camp letter is signed by a GMC-registered UK doctor after a remote review. The doctor does not examine the child and does not hold the child’s full medical record, so the letter records what was reviewed and states that no physical examination took place. Acceptance is always the organiser’s decision, and organisers set their own safeguarding, medical and consent requirements.
The consultation form does not set a minimum age. Where the letter is for a child, a parent or guardian completes the form, supplies the health information and gives consent on the child’s behalf.
When Is a Youth Camp Certificate Asked For?
UK residential youth camps
Many UK residential camps, sports academies and outdoor activity centres ask parents for a health declaration before accepting a child, and some ask for a doctor’s letter as well. Check what the organiser actually wants before ordering anything.
Overseas school trips
School trips abroad usually come with a health form that forms part of the parental consent and risk assessment paperwork. Some schools ask for that form to be countersigned by a doctor and some do not.
US summer camps
US camp forms built on the American Camp Association standard ask a clinician to confirm a physical examination carried out within the previous twelve months. A remote review cannot meet that, so those forms need a face to face appointment.
Sports tours and competitions abroad
Youth sports tours, football academies and athletics camps sometimes ask for medical clearance. Where an organiser wants fitness for a specific activity level confirmed, that calls for a face to face examination rather than a remote review of declared history.
Adventure and expedition programmes
High-activity expeditions such as Outward Bound and World Challenge carry real physical demands and may ask for medical clearance. Licensing under the Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations 2004 sits with the provider selling the activity, not with the participant, so no licence rule obliges a parent to buy a medical letter.
Scout, Guide and community group trips
Scout, Guide, faith group and community trips usually run on their own health form, completed by the parent. A doctor’s letter can add detail where a child has a relevant medical history, but it does not replace that form.

Camp America and US Camp Medical Forms
Camp America is an adult staff programme, not a children’s camp
Camp America places people in paid summer roles at American camps on a J-1 visa. Its published programme requirements state that applicants must be 18 years or older before 15 June of the summer they take part in, so it is not a route for a child attending camp.
The Camp America medical form carries a section that only a doctor may complete, and that doctor must not be a relative of the applicant. It asks the doctor to state whether they have access to the applicant’s full medical history, and it covers chronic illness, hospital admissions, mental health history, medication, immunisations and fitness to care for children.
A remote review cannot complete a form that requires a physical examination or access to a patient’s full medical record. The Camp America physician section and American Camp Association style US camp forms both fall into that group, so both need an examining doctor.
What a remote review can provide is a letter setting out the declared health history and the records you upload, which you can hand to the programme alongside the form an examining doctor completes.

Arrangements for medicines at camp, including inhalers and adrenaline auto-injectors, are set by the organiser and are a safeguarding matter for them. A letter can record what a child takes, but it cannot authorise a camp to hold or administer medicine and it does not replace the organiser’s own medication consent form. Vaccination requirements are set by the organiser or the destination, not by this letter.
How to Request a Youth Camp Medical Letter
Complete the consultation form
A parent or guardian completes the form where the letter is for a child. Select the summer camp reason, then give the child’s name, date of birth, medical history, conditions, allergies and regular medicines. The form also asks for a GP summary care record or similar evidence of health status, photo identification and a short video confirmation, so have those ready before you start.
A GMC-registered doctor reviews the submission
The doctor reviews what you have supplied. Where the history includes relevant conditions the doctor may ask for further evidence, such as a GP summary or a clinic letter, and may conclude that no letter can be issued on a remote review alone.
The letter arrives by email
Straightforward, complete submissions sent before 9pm are usually reviewed the same day, and otherwise by 9am the next morning. That is the usual turnaround rather than a guarantee.
Most organisers ask for health paperwork weeks in advance, so order with lead time. A complex history means the doctor will need to come back to you, and that takes longer than a same-day review.
