Each certificate is issued with anti-tampering protection and its own verification reference. If your employer, university, airline or insurer wants to confirm the document came from a GMC-registered doctor, they can check it against MedicalCert records. Altered or copied documents do not pass that check.

Every sports medical certificate issued through MedicalCert is signed by a GMC-registered GP. Where an organiser accepts a doctor-signed certificate, that is the standard it has to meet. France and Italy now run their own separate systems, so confirm what your event asks for before you apply.

Usually, but confirm it first. MedicalCert sports medical certificates are signed by GMC-registered doctors and are accepted by many UK and European organisers, clubs, gyms and insurers that ask for a doctor-signed document. There are two significant exceptions. Running competitions in France take the FFA Pass Prévention Santé rather than a doctor-signed certificate, and Italian competitive events need a certificate issued in Italy by a specialist in sports medicine. Check the exact wording your organiser asks for before you apply.
It varies by country and by organiser, and the European rules have changed. France replaced the doctor’s certificate for unlicensed adults with the Pass Prévention Santé, an online health pass from the Fédération Française d’Athlétisme costing 5 euros and valid for 12 months, which is required for running competitions in France; French triathlons take the FFTri Formulaire Info Santé instead. Italy requires competitive athletes to be examined and certified in Italy by a specialist in sports medicine, so a UK certificate does not stand in for it. Elsewhere a doctor-signed certificate is still commonly asked for, typically by organisers, clubs and insurers covering skydiving, martial arts gradings, cycling sportives and open water swims. Always check your own event before you apply.
Most certificates are delivered same day. Applications submitted by 11pm are delivered by 9am the following morning. Once you submit your form, a GMC-registered doctor reviews your case and issues your signed certificate to your inbox as a PDF, ready to forward to your organiser. If the reviewing doctor needs more information from you first, they will contact you before issuing.
You will need to complete a short online health questionnaire covering your general fitness, any existing medical conditions, and the sport or event you are entering. A short selfie video confirming your identity is also required. No prior GP visit or medical records are needed, the doctor assesses your case based on the information you provide.
If a doctor cannot clinically justify issuing a sports medical certificate based on the information provided, you will receive a full refund. No questions asked. We only issue certificates where there is a genuine clinical basis for doing so, your safety as an athlete is our priority.
